Privacy Policy

What we collect

Account information (name, email, a securely hashed password — never your plain-text password), and your study activity: quiz and exam answers, XP, streaks, hearts, flashcard views, and achievements. If you enable push notifications, we store a subscription endpoint for your device/browser so we can send reminders.

When you send a report through the “Report a problem” button, we also collect what you write, the page you were on, and — unless you untick the box before sending — a picture of that page as your browser drew it, plus your screen size and browser version. The picture is made in your own browser from the page itself: it captures the StudyOwl page only, never your address bar, your other tabs, or anything outside the app. You see the exact image before you send it, and nothing is captured unless you open the report form.

How we use it

To run your account (sign-in, book access), track and show your progress, send streak/reminder notifications you've opted into, and respond to reports or requests you submit. We don't sell your data, and we never share it for advertising. The few outside services we rely on to run StudyOwl (like the analytics and push-delivery services below) are listed on this page.

Who can see your activity

StudyOwl is provided through your school, review center, or organization — and that shapes who can see what. Administrators at your own organization can see your study progress and engagement (scores, mastery, streaks) as part of running the program, and a full admin can temporarily view the app exactly as you see it, read-only, to help troubleshoot — every such session is recorded in an audit log. A screenshot you attach to a report is visible only to administrators at your own organization, and to nobody else. Other learners see far less: your name and XP appear on leaderboards only if you opt in, and friends, study groups, and challenges only ever show what you chose to share, only inside your own organization. Nothing about you is visible to any other organization, and StudyOwl never shows your individual results publicly.

Cookies & analytics

We use a single session cookie to keep you signed in. We also use Google Analytics to understand overall site traffic — pages visited, approximate location, and device/browser type. Google Analytics sets its own cookies to do this and is governed by Google's privacy policy. This is aggregate, site-wide traffic data — it isn't linked to your account, email, or study activity.

StudyOwl also keeps a few small things in your browser's own storage rather than on our servers: which one-time prompts you've dismissed, which demo questions you've already seen, and enough of an in-progress quiz to survive an accidental refresh. That stays on the device it was written on — it isn't sent to us, isn't tied to your account, and clearing your browser data removes it.

Data retention & deletion

Your data is kept while your account is active. If your account is deleted (by you requesting it, or by an administrator after removal), your account and all associated study data — quiz history, XP, achievements — are permanently erased and can't be recovered.
